3rd
& 4th Day of September 2007
Polperro to Plymouth – Queen Annes Battery and return to Polperro.

Departed Polperro Monday 3rd September 08:32
Motored till 08:45 when CRINKER found a stiff North Westerly just off Talland Bay. Ahhh up goes the canvas.
A bone in her teeth most of the way From Looe Island and across Whitsand Bay till we reached Rame Head. Here it eased a little and we then picked up some more wind in Plymouth Sound. Arrived off the Breakwater at 11:45. Tacking up the sound in gusty flukey wind to reach Queen Annes Battery was a bit of fun as I did not want to use the motor.
This is a short low resolution Video its a bit rough as I was holding onto the tiller, main sheet and camera in gusty conditions
After just coming North of Drakes Island and
in sight of Plymouth Hoe I dropped the sails called QAB on CH80 and organised
to spend the night on the visitors berth. Motored in to find a cosy spot close
to all amenities.
Had quite a few yachties checking out
CRINKER probably because it was the only vessel in the marina that had some real
timber and varnish. All the others were white with aluminium and clanking
rigging.
After visiting the Marina office and receiving access codes to the marina facilities and security gate it was off for a well earned beer in Chandlers then a hot shower. Off to the movies which are just over the back. Then walked over the Sutton Harbour walkway lock gates to the historic Barbican. Came back and went to the China House for supper and liquid refreshment.
Awoke before dawn went to the Plymouth fishmarket at Sutton Harbour and managed to get a full flask of hot tea from a friendly wholesaler.
Cast off at dawn and headed back for Polperro. As the morning wind was light I motored out of the Sound around Penlee point and Rame head.

(
Rame Head can get some nasty little eddies and sometimes a steep race so I kept
an eye out for this. There was some rough water a little further out to sea but
I managed to creep inside of it.
An advantage of having a boat that does not draw much especially when her plate
is up.)
Entering Whitsand Bay CRINKER found a North by East. Up went the canvas and off we went making about 4kts. Not as quick as our outbound journey where we made well over 6kts at times, but this was adequate to make for the tide at home and get back on CRINKERS mooring.
Being a bit cautious I pinched a bit of North in case it went a bit off to the West. Fortunately it went more East and we had a good romp till the back of Looe Island where it backed off 09:46. Determined to sail back to Polperro and having made good so far, I ghosted along for 20mins then the wind came up from ENE and took us to the harbour entrance well in time 10:51 to make our mooring.
